Dyeing and Surface Design

Silk Painting and Surface Design

Spend a weekend with silks — dyeing, manipulating, and preparing pieces for further embellishment. Surface design techniques such as watercolor, resists, and immersion dyeing will be used in class. Non-toxic dyes are used, fixing methods are taught, and a general discussion of textile dyes and color theory is presented. The students will make samples and have a few scarves to take home. A $45 materials fee is payable to Springwater Fiber Workshop.

Weaving

Basic Weaving

In this basic weaving overview course we sample hand-controlled techniques such as beginning tapestry, rug making, and simple cloth making. Learn to dress a rigid-heddle loom, weave samples and an independent project.

Materials: $15 payable to Springwater. Materials for students projects are at students expense.

Intro to 4-Shaft Weaving

In this introduction to the versatile and more complex 4-harness loom, students learn to dress the loom, weave samplers of various loom-controlled patterns, and for those enrolled in the 9-week term, an opportunity to weave an independent project.

Teachers guide students who need practical experience in planning, weaving, and finishing projects or those wishing to pursue advanced harness techniques. Looms available for rent include 4- to 10-harness floor looms and portable 4- to 8-harness table looms.

Tapestry

Learn the ancient art of tapestry. Beginners concentrate on basic technical skills to effectively weave ideas and images. Advanced students focus on more sophisticated aspects of the medium. Lessons are geared towards the individual needs of the students. A small vertical loom with tensioning device is required. Prerequisite: Basic Weaving or prior tapestry experience.
