Out of Our Gardens and Neighborhoods

The DC area provides a great opportunity for growing and scavenging dye materials and fiber. The instructor will share her experiences, but you are encouraged to bring your own ideas on how we can enrich our fiber arts with dye materials and fibers we have grown or gathered locally.

Shibori

In this class you’ll learn such Shibori basics as Arashi (pole wrapped), Trikit (stitch resist), and Boshi (capping), and will make samples using silk, cotton and cold water dyes for these and other Shibori techniques. There will also be a discussion of dyes, discharges, and care of silk. At least one silk scarf will be completed in class and another will be started in class for finishing at home.

Low Water Immersion

Save time, save water, save dye! Learn this fast and colorful way to dye cotton, silk, and rayon for quilting, rag weaving, or to create cloth. To serve as the basis for other surface techniques such as stamping and painting. Unlike immersion dyeing where the cloth is dyed all one color, LWI yields unique pieces of cloth with multiple colors and subtle underlying patterns. The technique can also be used for yarns.
